NBA opening night: Knicks raise a banner as LeBron James and Jaylen Brown debut for Philadelphia
The NBA's 2026-27 regular season opens on Tuesday, 20 October, with three games on NBC and Peacock, according to the league's schedule [1][2][3]. The New York Knicks will raise their 2025-26 championship banner at Madison Square Garden before hosting the Philadelphia 76ers. For Philadelphia, LeBron James and Jaylen Brown are scheduled to make their regular-season debuts, NBA.com said [1][2].
The opening-night schedule
According to the NBA's 2026-27 schedule release, the league's "Every NBA game on NBC/Peacock" listing and the official schedule PDF, all three games on 20 October air nationally on NBC and Peacock [1][3][4]:
| Time (ET) | Game | TV | |---|---|---| | 3:00 p.m. | Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons | NBC / Peacock | | 7:00 p.m. | Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks | NBC / Peacock | | 9:30 p.m. | Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs | NBC / Peacock |
NBA.com said coverage of the Knicks game begins with NBA Showtime at 6:30 p.m. ET [1]. ESPN Radio will carry the 76ersΓÇôKnicks game nationally, the league said [1]. The schedule PDF lists the ThunderΓÇôSpurs game at 8:30 p.m. local time in San Antonio, which is 9:30 p.m. ET [3]. No other games are listed for 20 October [3].
Knicks: the first banner since 1973
The Knicks won the 2026 title on 13 June, beating the Spurs 94-90 in San Antonio in Game 5 to take the Finals 4-1, the AP reported [5]. Jalen Brunson scored 45 points, including 13 straight in the fourth quarter, as New York came back from 16 points down, according to AP [5]. It was the franchise's first championship since 1973 [5][6]. NBA.com said Brunson was named Finals MVP [6].
According to the league's schedule release, the Knicks "will raise an NBA championship banner to the rafters of Madison Square Garden for the first time since 1973" before facing Philadelphia [2]. NBA.com said the ceremony will take place before tip-off [1]. The start time of the ceremony itself had not been announced in the sources reviewed.
LeBron James and Jaylen Brown in Philadelphia
Both moves are confirmed by several outlets.
- Jaylen Brown. The 76ers acquired Brown from the Celtics, sending Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks to Boston, the AP reported on 2 July [14]. The deal became official on 6 July, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported [15]. Brown is the 2024 Finals MVP and a five-time All-Star [2][7].
- LeBron James. James signed a two-year, $8 million veteran's-minimum contract with a player option for the second year, the AP and NBC Sports Philadelphia reported [13][16]. The signing appeared in the NBA transaction log on 26 July, and the team announced it on 27 July [13][16]. NBA.com said James begins a record-extending 24th season [2].
NBA.com's opening-week guide on 13 October said James and Brown are "set to make their Philly debuts" at Madison Square Garden [8]. Both have already played for Philadelphia in the preseason. Brown scored 22 points in 17 minutes in a 120-97 preseason win over the Knicks on Monday, 5 October, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported on 8 October [9]. James made his preseason debut against Brooklyn on 8 October, NBC Sports Philadelphia reported. It was the first game in which Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Brown, James and Joel Embiid played together [10]. Embiid had six points on 1-for-5 shooting with eight turnovers in 23 minutes in that game, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia [10].
Availability. Before the preseason opener, ESPN reported on 5 October that the team pays "special attention" to James's left foot, "which has chronic arthritis, sources told ESPN," and to his lower back, which caused him to miss the first month of last season because of sciatica [11]. NBC10 Philadelphia reported on 13 October that Anfernee Simons (hamstring) and Adem Bona (left foot sprain) were partial participants in practice and that Dominick Barlow (back) did not practice [12]. Ariel Hukporti is out with a torn right Achilles tendon [10][12]. No official injury report for 20 October had been released at the time of writing.
The other two games
Celtics at Pistons, 3 p.m. ET. Detroit (60-22) and Boston (56-26) finished first and second in the East last regular season, but neither reached the conference finals, NBA.com said [2]. NBA.com's 13 October guide says Cade Cunningham's Pistons host "Jayson Tatum, Paul George and a retooled Celtics squad" [8].
Thunder at Spurs, 9:30 p.m. ET. This is a rematch of the 2026 Western Conference finals, which San Antonio won 4-3 [2]. According to NBA.com, Oklahoma City went an NBA-best 64-18 last regular season but was 1-4 against the Spurs. The Spurs also beat the Thunder by two points in the NBA Cup semifinals, NBA.com said [2]. The game features two-time reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and reigning Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama, NBA.com said [8].
What comes next
ESPN carries doubleheaders on 21 and 22 October. On 22 October, the 76ers' home opener is against Cleveland at 7 p.m. ET, NBA.com said [1][8]. On 23 October on Prime, the Knicks play at Boston at 7 p.m. ET [8].
